NVIDIA DLSS Coming to More Games, Including Star Wars Outlaws With DLSS 3.5

ASUS Updates Zenbook and ProArt Laptop Series with AMD Ryzen AI 9 and Snapdragon X Elite Processors

At Computex 2024, ASUS unveiled major updates to its popular laptop lineups, designed for the "Copilot+" era of AI computing. The first is the Zenbook S16 is a premium 16-inch laptop series powered by AMD's latest Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processors with dedicated AI acceleration. Remarkably, ASUS has managed to pack this high-performance silicon into an ultra-portable 1.1 cm thin chassis weighing just 1.5 kg. The Zenbook S16 integrates AMD's new NPU capable of a 50 TOPS of AI compute for accelerating AI/ML workloads. The centerpiece is the laptop's stunning 16-inch 3K OLED display made with ASUS Lumina technology. It offers 100% vibrant DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, a blazing-fast 120 Hz refresh rate with 0.2 ms response time, and up to 600 nits brightness. ASUS paired this premium visual experience with a six-speaker audio system for an immersive multimedia experience.

NVIDIA Project G-Assist Hands On and Under the Hood

On Sunday, NVIDIA announced Project G-Assist, the AI chatbot for gamers that can be pulled up in the middle of the gameplay, and sought help from. You could just pause your game and Google for help, but G-Assist can be activated in game, and is situationally aware of your game (e.g.: it knows where you're stuck and how to help you out). It won't play the game for you, but give you actionable info on how to play, or improve. For example, you could ask it how to craft a particular weapon, and where to find the items needed in game, and get concise guidance. G-Assist also knows about your graphics card, framerates and other telemetry data.

We went hands-on with G-Assist, and found that it's very capable of doing the things NVIDIA claims it can, short of playing the game for you. They are showing a demo of ARK Survival, but the impressive part is that there's no integration of G-Assist in Ark—rather is runs as an injected overlay that can capture user input. This means that G-Assist can work in ANY game, even without official support. We also learned how G-Assist works under-the-hood, particularly how the chatbot is situationally aware of your game, and it's fascinating.

A Quick Look at NVIDIA SFF-Ready Graphics Cards and Cases

At NVIDIA's Computex 2024 booth, we got a quick look at the enthusiast-segment GeForce RTX 40-series graphics cards and third-party PC cases that qualify for the company's new SFF-Ready market, which aims to incentivize building smaller enthusiast-segment graphics cards for the SFF crowd, and to try and arrest the runaway growth in the sizes of custom-design graphics cards. To qualify, a graphics card must be no larger than 304 mm x 151 mm x 50 mm (length x height x thickness), and for an SFF case to support such a card. Most of these cards and cases are already launched, and we're sure the standard will have some influence on the graphics card partners and case designers as NVIDIA heads towards its future GeForce RTX "Blackwell" generation.

GIGABYTE Joins COMPUTEX to Unveil Energy Efficiency and AI Acceleration Solutions

NVIDIA Announces Project G-Assist: An AI Chatbot that's Situationally Aware of Your Game

Imagine you're playing a game, you're stuck somewhere, don't know how to craft something, can't manage your inventory, or need to get out of some tricky puzzle. You normally pause and minimize your game, pull up a web-browser, and sift through dozens of search results to find the right Wiki or community thread that solves your problem. Wouldn't it be great, if you could pull up an in-game chat window and interact with an AI chat assistant (not unlike ChatGPT), except, the assistant is situationally aware of your entire game-state? That is NVIDIA Project G-Assist.

NVIDIA is training an AI on the vast ocean of information from the Internet on the countless games there are. You will soon be able to pull up an AI chat assistant, and will be able to either give it a text or natural voice input on how you want it to help you in the situation of the game you're in, and it will be able to guide you. G-Assist will not play the game for you, just give you precise and concise answers based on your game state (something no Google search or game wiki can). Besides assisting your gameplay, G-Assist will also help you with performance optimization and system tuning, the way the NVIDIA App and GeForce Experience already do.

NVIDIA Unveils New SFF-friendly Enthusiast GeForce RTX Graphics Card Standard

NVIDIA has taken note of the upward-and-outward trend for enthusiast-segment GeForce RTX gaming graphics cards to be huge, and out of sight for small form-factor gaming PC builds. This can be a problem, as SFF gaming PC builds are confined to exotic liquid cooling solutions that drive up costs, or to make do with mid-performance graphics cards, or simply give up the idea in favor of a next generation console, such as the upcoming ones from Xbox and PlayStation. To confront this trend, NVIDIA developed the new GeForce RTX SFF-Ready Enthusiast Graphics Card Guideline.

Put simply, the guideline calls for SFF-Ready advertised enthusiast segment graphics cards to be no larger than the specified dimensions. These are a maximum of 30.4 cm in length, a maximum of 15.1 cm in height, and a maximum of 5 cm or 2.5 slots in card thickness. Only cards at or smaller than these dimensions (304 mm x 151 mm x 50 mm) quality for the SFF-ready marker. It's also important to note that board partners cannot work their way around this by using AIO liquid cooling solutions where there's more to the card than its main component (i.e. tubing and a radiator). The total physical dimensions of the card cannot exceed the ones specified above. In addition to this, NVIDIA is now going to maintain a continuously updating list of graphics cards and cases that meet the SFF-Ready dimensions.

NVIDIA Brings AI Assistants to Life With GeForce RTX AI PCs

NVIDIA today announced new NVIDIA RTX technology to power AI assistants and digital humans running on new GeForce RTX AI laptops. NVIDIA unveiled Project G-Assist—an RTX-powered AI assistant technology demo that provides context-aware help for PC games and apps. The Project G-Assist tech demo debuted with ARK: Survival Ascended from Studio Wildcard. NVIDIA also introduced the first PC-based NVIDIA NIM inference microservices for the NVIDIA ACE digital human platform.

These technologies are enabled by the NVIDIA RTX AI Toolkit, a new suite of tools and software development kits that aid developers in optimizing and deploying large generative AI models on Windows PCs. They join NVIDIA's full-stack RTX AI innovations accelerating over 500 PC applications and games and 200 laptop designs from manufacturers. In addition, newly announced RTX AI PC laptops from ASUS and MSI feature up to GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs and power-efficient systems-on-a-chip with Windows 11 AI PC capabilities. These Windows 11 AI PCs will receive a free update to Copilot+ PC experiences when available.

NVIDIA Supercharges Ethernet Networking for Generative AI

NVIDIA today announced widespread adoption of the NVIDIA Spectrum -X Ethernet networking platform as well as an accelerated product release schedule. CoreWeave, GMO Internet Group, Lambda, Scaleway, STPX Global and Yotta are among the first AI cloud service providers embracing NVIDIA Spectrum-X to bring extreme networking performance to their AI infrastructures. Additionally, several NVIDIA partners have announced Spectrum-based products, including ASRock Rack, ASUS, GIGABYTE, Ingrasys, Inventec, Pegatron, QCT, Wistron and Wiwynn, which join Dell Technologies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Lenovo and Supermicro in incorporating the platform into their offerings.

NVIDIA Releases Digital Human Microservices, Paving Way for Future of Generative AI Avatars

NVIDIA today announced the general availability of NVIDIA ACE generative AI microservices to accelerate the next wave of digital humans, as well as new generative AI breakthroughs coming soon to the platform. Companies in customer service, gaming and healthcare are the first to adopt ACE technologies to simplify creating, animating and operating lifelike digital humans across customer service, telehealth, gaming and entertainment.

These include NVIDIA Nemotron-3 4.5B, the company's first SLM, which has been purpose-built to run on device with similar levels of precision and accuracy as large language models (LLMs) running in the cloud. Nemotron-3 4.5B SLM is now in early access. NVIDIA Audio2Face and NVIDIA Riva ASR on-device models will be available soon in early access. NVIDIA Devouring Chips Faster than South Korea's Supply, Lowest Inventory in 10 Years

South Korea's stock of semiconductor chips dropped more than it has since 2014. This big decrease shows that customers are buying chips faster than companies can make them, as they need more equipment for developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Official data released on May 31 revealed that in April, chip inventories fell by 33.7% compared to a year earlier - the largest drop since late 2014. This is the fourth month in a row that inventories have declined, while at the same time South Korea's exports of semiconductors have gone up again. Additionally, South Korea's production of chips rose 22.3% in April, which is less than the 30.2% increase from the previous month. Shipments from factories grew 18.6%, also lower than March's 16.4% growth.

South Korea is home to the two biggest memory chipmakers in the world (Samsung and SK Hynix), and they are competing to supply chips to NVIDIA, the latest having an insatiable appetite for more and more chips. These two Korean companies are in a race to develop a more advanced and more profitable version of high-bandwidth memory, or HBM. During the memory chip boom from 2013-2015, inventories didn't increase for about a year and a half. In the 2016-2017 cycle, inventory declines lasted nearly a year. A report from South Korea's central bank expects the latest surge in chip demand to continue at least until the first half of next year. This is because the "artificial intelligence boom" is driving up demand similarly to how cloud servers caused an expansion in 2016, and now mostly forgotten crypto-mining fever. South Korea will release its latest export data on June 1.

AMD, Broadcom, Cisco, Google, HPE, Intel, Meta and Microsoft Form Ultra Accelerator Link (UALink) Promoter Group to Combat NVIDIA NVLink

AMD, Broadcom, Cisco, Google, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Intel, Meta and Microsoft today announced they have aligned to develop a new industry standard dedicated to advancing high-speed and low latency communication for scale-up AI systems linking in Data Centers.

Called the Ultra Accelerator Link (UALink), this initial group will define and establish an open industry standard that will enable AI accelerators to communicate more effectively. By creating an interconnect based upon open standards, UALink will enable system OEMs, IT professionals and system integrators to create a pathway for easier integration, greater flexibility and scalability of their AI-connected data centers.

Blackwell Shipments Imminent, Total CoWoS Capacity Expected to Surge by Over 70% in 2025

TrendForce reports that NVIDIA's Hopper H100 began to see a reduction in shortages in 1Q24. The new H200 from the same platform is expected to gradually ramp in Q2, with the Blackwell platform entering the market in Q3 and expanding to data center customers in Q4. However, this year will still primarily focus on the Hopper platform, which includes the H100 and H200 product lines. The Blackwell platform—based on how far supply chain integration has progressed—is expected to start ramping up in Q4, accounting for less than 10% of the total high-end GPU market.

The die size of Blackwell platform chips like the B100 is twice that of the H100. As Blackwell becomes mainstream in 2025, the total capacity of TSMC's CoWoS is projected to grow by 150% in 2024 and by over 70% in 2025, with NVIDIA's demand occupying nearly half of this capacity. For HBM, the NVIDIA GPU platform's evolution sees the H100 primarily using 80 GB of HBM3, while the 2025 B200 will feature 288 GB of HBM3e—a 3-4 fold increase in capacity per chip. The three major manufacturers' expansion plans indicate that HBM production volume will likely double by 2025.

NVIDIA to Stick to Monolithic GPU Dies for its GeForce "Blackwell" Generation

NVIDIA's GeForce "Blackwell" generation of gaming GPUs will stick to being traditional monolithic die chips. The company will not build its next generation of chips as either disaggregated devices, or multi-chip modules. Kopite7kimi, a reliable source with NVIDIA leaks, says that the largest GPU in the generation, the "GB202," is based on a physically monolithic design. The GB202 is expected to power the flagship GeForce RTX 5090 (or RTX 4090 successor), and if NVIDIA sticking to traditional chip design for this, then it's unlikely that smaller GPUs will be any different.

In contrast, AMD started building disaggregated devices with its current RDNA 3 generation, with its top two chips, the "Navi 31" and "Navi 32," being disaggregated chips. An interesting rumor suggests that team red's RDNA 4 generation will see a transition from disaggregated chips to multi-chip modules—packages that contain multiple fully-integrated GPU dies. Back to the green camp, and NVIDIA is expected to use an advanced 4 nm-class node for its GeForce "Blackwell" GPUs.

Acer Debuts Premium Chromebook Plus Laptops for Productivity and Gaming with Google AI Built-in

Acer today debuted two new premium Chromebook Plus laptops - the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 and Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE - that combine versatile designs with a 2x faster Intel Core processor and up to double the memory and storage, giving people the power to do even more all at once.

As Chromebook Plus devices, the two new models support enhanced generative AI features for connectivity, creativity, and collaboration, such as a "help me write" feature available with just a right click, Google Photos' Magic Editor, Gemini, and more. ADT-Link Launches USB4 to PCIe 4.0 Bridge Board

USB4 hasn't exactly taken off as yet, largely due to a shortage of devices in the market and with a limited number of device controllers, the competition in the market is also slow. With Thunderbolt compatibility, there are plenty of USB4 compatible hosts out there though, even though you only get 32 Gbps rather than 40 Gbps of data throughput when a USB4 device is connected to Thunderbolt 3 or 4, although Thunderbolt 5 will allow for the full 40 Gbps. A company called ADT-Link has launched a product it calls the UT3G which is pretty much a retail ready bridge solution that allows techies and tinkerers to try out whatever PCIe devices they have over USB4. The adapter has a full-length PCIe x16 slot, but it's limited to a four lane PCIe interface which is compatible with PCIe 4.0, albeit not at the full 64 Gbps that such an interface can deliver.

In addition to the USB4 Type-C port on the PCB there's a standard 24-pin ATX power supply connector for power, which means that this isn't really a portable solution. However, the company has tested the UT3G with various graphics cards from both AMD and NVIDIA to make sure you can use it as an external graphics card dock. The UT3G has also been tested to be compatible with Windows, Linux and macOS, although macOS is limited to AMD GPUs. The board is built around the ASMedia ASM2464PD USB4 to PCIe 4.0 bridge and this shouldn't come as a surprise, as so far this is the only such device controller. NVIDIA's Arm-based AI PC Processor Could Leverage Arm Cortex X5 CPU Cores and Blackwell Graphics

Last week, we got confirmation from the highest levels of Dell and NVIDIA that the latter is making a client PC processor for the Windows on Arm (WoA) AI PC ecosystem that only has one player in it currently, Qualcomm. Michael Dell hinted that this NVIDIA AI PC processor would be ready in 2025. Since then, speculation has been rife about the various IP blocks NVIDIA could use in the development of this chip, the two key areas of debate have been the CPU cores and the process node.

Given that NVIDIA is gunning toward a 2025 launch of its AI PC processor, the company could implement reference Arm IP CPU cores, such as the Arm Cortex X5 "Blackhawk," and not venture out toward developing its own CPU cores on the Arm machine architecture, unlike Apple. Depending on how the market recieves its chips, NVIDIA could eventually develop its own cores. Next up, the company could use the most advanced 3 nm-class foundry node available in 2025 for its chip, such as the TSMC N3P. Given that even Apple and Qualcomm will build their contemporary notebook chips on this node, it would be a logical choice of node for NVIDIA. Then there's graphics and AI acceleration hardware.
